Day 1  Saturday, March 21: Arrival, Temple Mount & Dome of the Rock and Church of the Holy Sepulchre

A company representative will meet us at the Ben Gurion Airport airport and transfer us to our hotel in Jerusalem.  Sacred to a number of religious traditions, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the city of Jerusalem is often considered the most sacred site on earth. Considered the holiest site in Jerusalem, the Temple Mount, is a massive masonry platform occupying the south-east corner of Jerusalem’s Old City.   All three Abrahamic faiths regard it as the location of Mount Moriah, where Abraham prepared to offer his son Isaac (or Ishmael in the Muslim tradition) to God.
For the Jewish, it is where their Temple once stood, housing the Ark of the Covenant.  Orthodox Jews do not ascend to the Temple Mount for fear of stepping on the site of the Holy of Holies.  Instead, they worship at its Western Wall while they hope for a rebuilt Temple to rise with the coming of a long-awaited Messiah.  For Christians, the Temple featured prominently in the life of Jesus, and for Muslims, the Temple Mount is al-Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary). It is Islam’s third holiest site, after Mecca and Medina, and the whole area is regarded as a mosque.
After lunch, we will go up the Temple Mount to the Dome of the Rock. Going out of the complex we will walk the Via Dolorosa, to finish in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the holiest place for Christians around the world. There we will consider 3 sacred objects: the silver chalice, spear of destiny and a sacred sword. We will also visit the Coptic Church, which continues the Christian Gnostic tradition.  Afterwards we’ll have dinner together in a local restaurant. (L,D)

Day 2   Sunday, March 22: Mystic Jerusalem, Temple Mount

Following breakfast, we will start our tour in Jerusalem with a second visit to the Temple Mount. The present site is dominated by three monumental structures from the early Umayyad period: the al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock and the Dome of the Chain, as well as four minarets.  The Jewish temple, the most important and impressive building in the whole ancient world, stood on the Temple Mount for a thousand years. We will visit the impressive archaeological excavations of the southern and western walls of the Temple Mount and see models and presentations of the Temple in ancient times. The Western Wall stretches along almost half a kilometer, but today, the part visible to all at the Western Wall Plaza is a mere 70 meters of it. The tour of the Western Wall Tunnels will enable us to reach the segments of the Wall hidden from view, and to see the original and special stones that speaks to an ancient past. We’ll walk through ancient and fascinating subterranean spaces with exquisite archaeological findings, such as large stone arches, water pits, an ancient water aqueduct that ends at the Strouthion Pool. From there we will go to the City of David and to the Siloam spring and pool, to get a sense of how the city looked in ancient times. We will go up to Mount Zion and see David’s tomb – a sacred Jewish place – as well as the room where the Last Supper was held, and the Dormition Abbey, which is a mystery temple dedicated to Mary and the feminine principle. After lunch in one of the restaurants of the Old City, we’ll drive to the Mount of Olives, to visit an unknown Sufi shrine and some of the churches on the mount, have a beautiful panoramic view of the city, and start walking down the Mount of Olives in the footsteps of Jesus when he entered Jerusalem. In the valley of Kidron we will visit the tomb of Virgin Mary, all Nations church and the Avshalom tomb, and end with a tea break. Overnight in Jerusalem. (B,L)

Day 3   Monday, March 23: Judean desert, Masada and the Dead Sea

This day is dedicated to the Judean desert and the Dead Sea – the lowest place on earth. First, we’ll view the hermit dwellings in the canyon of Wadi Kelt and discuss the special desert monasticism that developed in the Judean desert. From there we will go to the Qumran, where the Essenes communed, attempting to create a pure society. We’ll pass the site of the famous New Testament parable of the Good Samaritan, arrive at Masada and ride the cable car to the legendary mountaintop ruins of King Herod’s palaces.
During this day we will have the opportunity to bathe in the Dead Sea and enjoy the desert quiet. In the evening we will drive back to Jerusalem. Overnight (B,L)

Day 4 Tuesday, March 24th : Ceasarea and Shopping at Jerusalem’s famous Bazaar.

After breakfast we’ll depart for our visit to the ancient city of Caesarea Maritima that was built by Herod the Great about 25–13 BCE as a major port. It served as an administrative center of Judaea Province of the Roman Empire, and later as the capital of the Byzantine Palaestina Prima province. Caesarea is a magnificent site, a national park where amazing ancient harbor ruins, beautiful beaches, and impressive modern residences sit side by side.Located on Israel’s Mediterranean Coast about halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa, the site has recently been restored to create one of Israel’s most attractive and fascinating archaeological sites. The restored Caesarea amphitheater hosts modern-day concerts during the summer months, whilst the Old City has a range of boutiques and restaurants. We’ll have lunch at one of these restaurants before leaving for our late afternoon visit to the famous Jerusalem Old City Bazaar, a labyrinth of alleyways lined with shops selling everything from handmade jewelry and exotic scarves to hookahs and ceramics. Overnight Jerusalem (B,L,D)
