Overnight in Istanbul- Levni Hotel (D)Day 2 – Thursday, October 3  Old City of Sultan Ahmed visiting the Hippodrome – Hagia Sophia – Blue Mosque and Cistern.

After breakfast, we’ll leave for our tour of Istanbul, including visits to the Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Cistern. After visiting the Hippodrome, we’re off to explore the magnificent Hagia Sophia (Greek for ‘Holy Wisdom’) and the very mysterious subterranean Basilica Cistern that lies beneath it. The jewel in the crown of two of the longest lasting Empires the world has ever known: the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, Hagia Sophia is one of the most significant buildings in the world. Hagia Sophia was the main church of the Christian world for 900 years, before becoming Turkey’s principal mosque for over four centuries. One of the modern 7 Wonders of the World, Hagia Sophia was built by Byzantine Emperor, Justinian in 532-537 AD. But even earlier, during the time of Emperor Constantine, a great cathedral stood on the site.Located about 150 meters from Hagia Sophia is the Basilica Cistern, one the largest and most extensive ancient underground sites in the world. At the back of the Cistern, there is an upside-down Medusa head supporting one of the columns, and not far from this, is a second Medusa head on its side. Next to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque was constructed between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed I. Its Külliye contains Ahmed’s tomb, a madrasah and a hospice. Hand-painted blue tiles adorn the mosque’s interior walls, and at night the mosque is bathed in blue as lights frame the mosque’s five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes.   Overnight in Istanbul- Levni Hotel (B,L)

Day 3 – Friday, October 4   Istanbul Archaeological Museum, Grand Bazaar & Spice Market

After breakfast we’ll leave for our visit to the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. Housing over one million objects, the museum boasts a large collection of Turkish, Hellenistic and Roman artifacts.

Afterwards, we’ll have lunch before our bus takes us to the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops featuring jewelry, Turkish towels, carpets and many many ore locally crafted items.  We’ll finish the day at the Spice Market, featuring at least 85 shops selling spices, Turkish delight and other sweets, jewelry, souvenirs, and dried fruits and nuts. We’ll return to the hotel for a brief rest before we’ll be treated to an evening dinner served on our private yacht on a 2-hour cruise in the Bosphorus past some of Istanbul’s most iconic sites.
Overnight in Istanbul- Levni Hotel  (B,L,D)

Day 4 –  Saturday, October 5 – Flight to Adiyaman, Tumulus & Roman Cendere Bridge and Mt. Nemrut

Morning flight to Adiyaman departing at 11.05 flight arriving to Adiyaman at 12.50 PM.
After an early breakfast we’ll depart for our flight to Adiyaman. Having played host to several different cultures and civilizations, Adıyaman is known to be one of the oldest settlements on Earth. Discoveries from every human phase are found on the region, with many claiming that it dates to the age of the first appearance of man on earth.
We will transfer to Kahta and visit Karakus Tumulus & Roman Cendere Bridge and then  check into our rooms at the Dedeamn Park Hotel in Adiyaman.

After seeing some of the sites and enjoying lunch and a brief rest, we will leave for our sunset visit to the extremely fascinating and mysterious Mt. Nemrut, known as the 8th Wonder of World.

In 62 BC, King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene built a tomb-sanctuary flanked by enormous statues of himself, two lions, two eagles and various Greek, Armenian, and Iranian gods. These statues were once seated majestically on stone thrones in front of the pyramid shaped mountain peak.

An artist’s rendition of how a restoration might appear.

But, now, we see the heads toppled off from their bodies following a period of iconoclasm. We also see stone slabs with bas-relief figures that are thought to have formed a large frieze. These slabs display the ancestors of Antiochus, who included both Greek and Persians. The same statues and ancestors found throughout the site can also be found on the tumulus at the site, which is 161 feet tall and almost 500 feet in diameter.

The western terrace contains a large slab with a lion, showing the arrangement of stars and the planets Jupiter, Mercury and Mars on July 7th , 62 BC. In fact, there are many alignments with solar, lunar and stellar events that add to the mystery of this fantastic site.
The mountain top is said to have been built —and is covered with loose gravel.

What secrets lie beneath this man-made structure?

Afterwards, we’ll depart for our hotel. Overnight in Adiyaman – Dedeamn Park Hotel (previously Hilton Garden Inn) (B,L)

Day 5 – Sunday, October 6 –  Gobekli Tepe, Archaeology Museum of Urfa and the Halepli Bahce Mosaic Museum

After breakfast check out of the hotel and continue to Urfa. The first stop will be Gobekli Tepe. Said to be 12,000 years old or more, the Megalithic site of Göbekli Tepe (Turkish for “Potbelly Hill”) is a series of mainly circular and oval-shaped structures set on the top of a hill. It has been labeled as the oldest known man-made religious structure. The massive sequence of stratification layers suggests several millennia of activity, perhaps reaching back to the Mesolithic Age. The astonishing stones and friezes of Gobekli Tepe are preserved intact for reasons that mystify us today.
The site appears to have been deliberately and systematically buried in a feat of labor every bit as remarkable as the stone carvings themselves. Much to ponder and discuss as we explore the area. The reliefs on the pillars include foxes, lions, cattle, hyenas, wild boar, wild asses, cranes, ducks, scorpions ants, spiders, serpents, and a small number of anthropomorphic or human-like figures. Some of the reliefs have been deliberately erased.

The anthropomorphic figures have been described as supernatural or multi-dimensional beings. In the center of one of the shrines there is a limestone pillar that ‘sings’ when smacked. The image depicted on it is an anthropomorphic figure, with a decorated belt and hands carved in relief at its waist with mysterious symbols in the area of the throat.
What messages are being transported over time and space? Comparing the patterns and symbolism, which is mirrored at sites worldwide, may help us to connect the dots.
Lunch will be in the city center in Urfa.

After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant we’re off to explore the Archeological Museum of Sanlıurfa that houses over 70,000 artifacts and works of art from all ages, including items found at Goblekli Tepe.

We will also visit the Halepli Bahce Mosaic Museum located nearby.
Overnight in Urfa – Hilton Garden Inn  (B,L)

Day 6 – Monday, October 7   Harran, Karahan Tepe and evening exploration of Urfa

After breakfast visit Harran, founded at some point between 2500 and 2000 BC, possibly as a merchant colony by Sumerian traders from Ur. Over the course of its early history, Harran rapidly grew into a major Mesopotamian cultural, commercial and religious center. Harran is situated at an important geographical crossroad, both between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers and at the border between the ancient Mesopotamian and Anatolian cultures. The earliest known settlements in the region surrounding Harran date to 10000–8000 BC and settlements in its close vicinity are known to have existed by 6000 BC.
Harran mainly attracts attention today due to the distinctive vernacular architecture of the houses in its old town, known as beehive houses or kümbets. This tower at Harran was once used by the Sabeans as an observation point for astronomy. This tower at Harran was once used by the Sabeans as an observation point for astronomy.  Some believe it was the inspiration for the Tarot card labeled ‘The Tower’

Next we’ll leave to explore the 11,400-year-old site of Karahan tepe, where excavations have uncovered 250 obelisks featuring animal figures since 1997. Excavations here suggest that society was established before the dawn of agriculture.Karahan Tepe is considered part of a constellation of contemporaneous settlements that extends over 100km and includes Gobekli Tepe and at least 11 other unexcavated sites.

Next, we’ll return back to Urfa and  explore the city of Urfa , Holly Balikli Pond and surrounding area with amazing Market place with its small mazes and coffee shops & herb shops.   Overnight in Urfa – Hilton Garden Inn

Day 7 –  Tuesday, October 8 –  Flight to Ankara and drive to visit the ancient city of Gordian

We’ll transfer to the airport and take the 9:40 AM direct flight to Ankara arriving at 10:55 AM. We’ll directly proceed to Gordion, which is about a 1.5 hour drive and stop for lunch on the way. Gordion, the capital city of ancient Phrygia, is known for its story of the Gordian Knot. According to ancient tradition, in 333 BCE Alexander the Great cut (or otherwise unfastened) the Gordian Knot: this intricate knot joined the yoke to the pole of a Phrygian wagon that stood on the acropolis of the city. The wagon was associated with King Midas or Gordias (or both) and was connected with the dynasty’s rise to power. It was said that whoever could loosen the knot was destined to become the ruler of Asia. Gordion is also known for its many artificial mounds constructed over burial chambers called tumuli. Tumulus MM (for ‘Midas Mound’), the Great Tumulus, is the largest burial mound at Gordion, containing a rich and wide assortment of Phrygian artifacts. The Phrygians, known in antiquity as the Sea Peoples, assumed the role that the Hittites had enjoyed prior to this period.

The most famous king of Phrygia was the legendary Midas. According to the Greek historian Herodotus, King Midas was the first foreigner to make an offering at the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, dedicating the throne from which he gave judgment.

Afterwards, we’ll drive to Ankara.   Overnight in Ankara – Radisson Blu Hotel  (B,L)

Day 8 – Wednesday, October 9 – Ankara Anatolian Civilization Museum and Hattusa

After breakfast, we’ll begin with an early morning visit to the Ankara Anatolian Civilization Museum located on the south side of Ankara Castle. Not to be missed, its unique collection, which includes treasures from Paleolithic, Neolithic, Hattie, Hittite, Phrygian, Urartian and Roman cultures is one of the world’s most unique displays.Afterwards, we’ll drive to the amazing site of Hattusa and have lunch before visiting the site including Yazilikaya. Having an old and deeply rooted culture, Hattusa has cradled many civilizations back to an estimated 10,000 years or more. A site that is home to many ‘megalithic’ anomalies, it was the capital of the Hittite Empire in the late Bronze Age. The ‘Lions Gate’ bears a strong resemblance to the one at Mycenae, Greece. Lions are seen at the entrances of several cities and complexes throughout the ancient world, signifying places of huge significance and power.Historians are unsure of where the Hittite civilization came from and went. They just disappeared from the vast historical timeline without a trace.

They revered a large pantheon of ‘gods and goddesses’ similar to many other neighboring cultures with a focus on their storm god, Tarhunt, and sun goddess Arinna. Tarhunt’s conflict with the serpent Illuyanka mirrors the struggles between Indra and the cosmic serpent Vritra in Vedic mythology, and with Thor and the serpent Jörmungandr in Norse mythology. We also see this reflected with the Neter, RA and the serpent Apophis in Egyptian mythology.

Women shared equal status with men which seemed to have stemmed from an older matriarchal civilization.
We’ll discuss the incredible large Nephrite / Jade blocks that were placed inside the structures and what their possible significance was.
About 1200 meters to the northeast of the main site of Hattusas is the famous rock shrine of Yazilikaya. This was a holy site for the Hittites, located within walking distance of the gates of the city of Hattusa. It had two main chambers formed inside a group of rock outcrops. Access to the roofless chambers were controlled by gateway and building structures built right in front of them, however only the foundations of those structures survived today. Most impressive today are the rock reliefs of Chambers A and B portraying the gods of the Hittite pantheon.
The most impressive is Chamber A, which contains rock-cut relief of 64 deities in procession. The left wall shows a procession of male deities, wearing the traditional kilts, pointed shoes and horned hats. The right wall shows a procession of female deities wearing crowns and long skirts. The only exception to this divide is the goddess of love and war, Shaushka (Mesopotamian Ishtar/Inanna; Egyptian Hathor) who is shown on the male procession with two female attendants.

We’ll check into our hotel and have dinner. Overnight in Hattusas -Baskent Demiralan Hotel (B,L,D)

Day 9 –  Thursday, October 10      Cappadocia and Goreme Open Air Museum

After breakfast we’ll drive to Cappadocia which takes about 3 hours. First we’ll visit the Goreme Open Air Museum, and time permitting, and if there’s time we’ll go to Devrent & Pigeon Valley Uchisar.  Cappadocia is a miraculous wonder of nature, due to volcanic eruptions in the region millions of years ago.“Fairy Chimneys” that seem haunted and
known to change color with every sunset, as well as hundreds of underground cities with sacred spiritual areas that extend very deep into the earth are all enveloped in an atmosphere that is ethereal and otherworldly.

Göreme Park lies in the heart of Cappadocia and its churches are among the best-known and most frequently visited of the Cappadocian cave monuments. The area lies between several parallel colorful valleys and is home to painted Byzantine chapels, monastic complexes, cave dwellings and all kinds of spaces cut into the smooth cliffs and the conical pinnacles that were shaped millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions and subsequent erosion processes.

Afterwards, we’ll check into our fabulous and unique ‘caverns’ or rooms at the MDC Cave Hotel.  Overnight in Urgup -MDC Cave Hotel, Cappadocia (B,L)

Day 10 – Friday, October 11   Optional Hot Air Balloon ride at sunrise,
Derinkuyu and Avanos

Optional Hot Air Balloon ride at sunrise time can be offered to people who are interested, at an additional cost. Later in the morning visit Derinkuyu, one of the largest underground settlements in the region, where food stores, kitchens, stalls, sacred chapels, wine production areas, ventilation chimneys, water wells and schools were discovered. Archaeologists date these back to the time of the Hittites which lived 4000 years ago, however, they could be far more ancient. What caused the ancient civilizations that inhabited this vast underground world to live this way?  And, maybe more importantly— are there links to subterranean tunnels and cities found elsewhere all over the world? The historical region of Cappadocia, where Derinkuyu is situated, contains several historical underground cities, carved out of a unique geological formation. Over 200 underground cities at least two levels deep have been discovered in the area between Kayseri and Nevşehir, with around 40 of those having at least three levels. The troglodyte city at Derinkuyu is one of the best examples.
After the visit and lunch, we’ll go to Avanos to see the famous pottery making with free time for shopping as well. If time allows, we’ll stop at the Pasabag Museum as well.
Overnight in Urgup -MDC Cave Hotel (B,L)

Day 11 – Saturday, October 12  Çatalhöyük  & Whirling Dirvishes

After breakfast, we’ll drive to Konya and following a Lunch break, we’ll visit the huge and mystical site of Çatalhöyük. This Neolithic site (approximately 7500 BCE to 5700 BCE), first discovered in the late 1950s, rapidly became famous internationally due to the large size and dense occupation of the settlement, as well as the spectacular   wall paintings, figurines and artifacts that were found here—including mother goddess figures, bulls, lions and vultures.  We will explore the many unsolved mysteries and anomalies, including the evidence found that clearly displays knowledge of advanced technologies by this civilization that spanned more than 2,000 years.

James Mellaart, who spent several years excavating Çatalhöyük, questioned:
“How did they polish a mirror of obsidian, a hard-volcanic rock, without scratching it and how did they drill holes through stone beads (including obsidian), holes so small that no modern steel needle can penetrate. When and where did they learn to smelt copper and lead…?“

We’ll return back to Konya and free time before the whirling dervish ceremony in Mevlana Cultural Center.

“A sacrifice of the mind to love”

Related to Rumi, the Sufi Dancing at Konya, is a customary meditation practice performed within the sema, or ceremony of devotion, through which dervishes seek to reach a greater connection to God. This is sought through abandoning one’s ego or personal desires, listening to the music, focusing on God, and spinning one’s body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the Solar System orbiting the Sun.

“During the elegantly simple performance, rotating with skirts swirling in a choreographed constellation of dancers, the dervishes are believed to become a conduit for divine blessings.”
“Entranced by a 700-year-old ritual, the whirling dervishes perform a Sufi dance, steered by rhythmic breathing and chants of “Allah”, as they seek to become one with God. Their white robes rise and fall in unison, spinning faster and faster. The right palm is raised to the heavens to receive God’s blessings, which are communicated to earth by the left hand pointing to the ground. As they continue turning in a spiritual trance, the dancers float between the two worlds. They are now in a deeply personal and intense form of meditation.”   ~ Ancient Sufi Dance: Rumi’s Whirling Dervishes by James Bainbridge

We’ll walk back to our hotel for a free evening.   DInner on your own. Overnight in Konya – Hilton Garden Inn (B,L)

Day 12 – Sunday, October 13          Denizli Pamukkale

After breakfast, we leave for Denizli Pamukkale. More than just a spectacular landscape, Pamukkale is home to thermal pools and an entire ancient city. After the 5-hour drive we’ll visit the ancient city of Hierapolis, and the Hierapolis Museum.

Hierapolis or “Holy City” was originally a Phrygian cult centre of the Anatolian mother goddess, Cybele and later became a Greek city. Its location was centered upon the remarkable hot springs in classical Phrygia in southwestern Anatolia.
The Archaeology Museum has been located in the great Roman Baths since 1984. The museum also includes artifacts from Laodiceia, Colossae, Tripolis, Attuda and other towns of the Lycos (Çürüksu) valley. Pamukkale, which means ‘cotton castle’ in Turkish, and is a must-visit when you’re in Turkey. Its white calcium travertines are one of the most photographed places in all of Turkey. We’ll check into our rooms at our hotel and have dinner.
Overnight in Pamukkale- Colassae Thermal & Spa Resort  (B,L,D)

Day 13 – Monday, October 14      Ephesus and the Temples of Artemis and Apollo and Ephesus Archaeological Museum

After breakfast in Pamukkale drive to Ephesus and the Temples of Artemis and Apollo    and overnight in Izmir. The Temple of Artemis or Artemision, was a Greek temple dedicated to an ancient, local form of the goddess Artemis. Dated to  7th century BC. recent excavations have shown that the site was occupied as far back as the Bronze Age. The temple became an important attraction, visited by merchants, kings, and sightseers, many of whom paid homage to Artemis in the form of jewelry and various goods. It also offered sanctuary to those fleeing persecution or punishment, a tradition linked in myth to the Amazons who twice fled there seeking the goddess’s protection from punishment, firstly by Dionysus and later, by Heracles.Apollo was the main deity of the sanctuary of Didyma, also called Didymaion, well renowned in antiquity because of its famed oracle. This oracle of Apollo was situated within what was, and is, one of the world’s greatest temples to Apollo. The remains of this Hellenistic temple belong to the best preserved temples of classical antiquity. Besides this temple other buildings existed within the sanctuary which have been rediscovered recently; a Greek theater and the foundations of the above-mentioned Hellenistic temple of Artemis.
After a visit to the Ephesus  Archeological  Museum, We’ll enjoy a fabulous Farewell dinner and check into our rooms at the Kordon Pasaport Hotel. Overnight in Izmir – Kordon Pasaport Hotel (B,L,D)

Day 14 – Tuesday, October 15    Flight to Istanbul and International Flight (not included) home.
After breakfast, we’ll take the early morning flight back to Istanbul airport to connect with our International flights back home.   (B)
